VENOM BITE THE BEEF IN LOSS ON THE ROAD
June 11, 2019—The Omaha Beef took on Amarillo Venom last night in Amarillo. The Beef came into the matchup with a 7-2 record, hoping to get a win on the road in the battle for a home playoff game. Derrick Bernard started the game off strong, with a 12-yard run for a touchdown early in the first quarter. The following play, Zeke Arevalo’s kickoff couldn’t be returned from the end zone by the Venom, giving the Beef a rogue, and put them up 8-0. Amarillo fired back the next drive to put up seven on the board. At the end of the first quarter the Beef led Amarillo 8-7.
Bernard once again, runs in for a touchdown from 2-yards out to start the second. It was a back and forth battle the rest of the first half. Bernard had yet again, another 12-yard run for a touchdown. Amarillo would score three touchdowns in the second quarter to the Beefs two. At the end of the first half, Beef: 22, Amarillo: 24.
The Beef started the second half off just how the first half ended, with a strong performance by Bernard. With a 3-yard run, Bernard put the beef up by four early in the third quarter. Amarillo would get one back shortly after. Antonio Bray would get his first rushing touchdown of the game in the middle of the third to gain a four-point lead (35-31). Amarillo would get the last touchdown in the third quarter to put them up by three.
It was a slow, hard fought fourth quarter. Amarillo struck first with a reception for a touchdown to extend their lead to 10. The Beef got one right back with a completion in the endzone from Bernard to Donovan Rasberry to put the Beef within three. Omaha held Amarillo on defense to have one last chance in the final minute, but Arevalo’s field goal was blocked, and thus giving Amarillo the victory 45-42 over the Beef. Marvin Jones’ first game as Omaha Beef head coach ended in a loss. Jones assumed the head coaching duties earlier this week for James Kerwin.
Omaha is now tied with Salina for first place in the Northern Division of the CIF. The Beef welcome Salina to the Slaughterhouse this Saturday, June 15 at Ralston Arena.
