BEEF LOSE CLOSE PLAYOFF GAME IN SALINA
(Ralston, NE) July 1, 2019—Omaha Beef (8-4) traveled down to Salina (8-4) on Saturday in a battle of the North. The winner, a North division championship and a spot in the CIF Champions Bowl V.
Salina took an early lead in the first quarter scoring three touchdowns to the Beef’s zero. The Beef got on the board early in the second quarter with a 28-yard field goal from Zeke Arevalo to make the score 3-21. Salina would answer back the next drive with a field goal of their own. Derrick Bernard got things going halfway through the second with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Julian Stafford. Salina would close the half with another field goal extending their lead (10-27).
The second half was an absolute thriller. Darrian Miller would start it off with a 9-yard touchdown run to put the Beef within 10. The next drive Salina was held to yet another field goal by the Beef defense (17-30). Bernard and Stafford would connect again from 2-yards out to make it a one possession game. Salina snuck a late touchdown in the last play of the third, score (23-37).
The Beef defense could not do much more in the fourth quarter as they held Salina to only one touchdown. Early in the quarter, Bernard finds the endzone from 5-yards out cutting the Salina lead to just eight. Salina would get their only score of the fourth the next drive (29-44). After that, the Beef dominated. Bernard and Stafford connected for a third time from 3-yards out to put the Beef within eight. With zero seconds on the clock Bernard leaped in the endzone from 4-yards out to cut the Salina lead to two, the two-point conversion pass failed, and Salina took the win 44-42. Bernard passed for 174-yards and rushed for 64 with a total of five touchdowns accumulated from the two. Stafford had 64 receiving yards, Miller was short behind with 55 and 25 rushing yards.
Omaha ends their season 8-5, a huge turnaround from their 2018 season (4-8). Next year the Beef hope to bring home a championship trophy to Omaha with owner Ricky Bertz, who came into the Beef organization with only four months to prepare for the 2019 season.
