Beef Clinch Playoff Spot with Rivalry Win
The Omaha Beef (8-4) defeated the Sioux City Bandits (7-5) 60-50 in a win to get in scenario Saturday night. The win put them in position to play Salina for the third time this season and a shot to play in the CIF Championship.
Omaha opened the game with the ball first. The Beef were able to establish the run game and Calvin Phillips ended the first drive with a touchdown. After a missed extra point, Sioux City responded with a passing touchdown from Dillion Turner to Londell Lee. The bandits had control most of the 2nd quarter, but the Omaha defense was able to get a few key stops forcing a blocked field goal and a turnover on downs. Kicker Ezequiel Arevalo was able to sneak a field goal in before halftime to bring the deficit to one (20-19)
During the third quarter, the scoring amongst both teams went back and forth with a quarterback duel in the air and on the ground. Both Derrick Bernard and Turner had two passing touchdowns in the quarter, but the legs of Bernard changed the game after his 26-yard rushing touchdown in the beginning of the fourth quarter. Omaha took the lead for the first time since the second quarter (39-34). The Bandits battled back after scoring a touchdown and recovering an onside kick to take the lead right after. Bernard was able to keep his composure and lead the Beef to another score and Jermicheal Williams closed the game with his second onside kick recovery for a touchdown on the season.
When the Beef run the ball successfully, they are a hard team to beat. Bernard finished with 109-yards passing and four touchdowns, but his ability to run the ball made the difference. Out of the 166-yards rushing, Bernard had 92 and averaged over 10-yards a carry. Third down conversions were key in this game with the Beef going 7-10 (70%). The Omaha offense was efficient, and it showed on the field.
Now that the Beef are back to their winning ways after losing three straight, they will look to take their momentum on the road against the Salina Liberty, were the Liberty have gotten the best of the Beef during the last two matchups.
